The LEWIN ·LANDGREN ·BJÖRÄNGE Trio opened our 2014 annual Jazz Festival IN SPIRIT in the blue light of the Kaiser W ilhelm Memorial Church on July 4th, the Independence Day of the United States. IN SPIRIT — dialogues between Theology and Jazz — was dedicated that year to the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic visit to Berlin. I cannot think of a more suitable opening than these inspired improvisations on the carefully arranged music of Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts by Håkan Lewin, Johannes Landgren and Jon-Erik Björänge. Ellington was, alongside Mary Lou
Williams and John Coltrane, one of the founding fathers of Sacred Jazz. He insisted that this music should not be called jazz but rather considered to be sacred music in the same tradition as Michael Praetorius and Johann Sebastian Bach, who had been able to integrate popular music in their musica sacra for the church of their time. Listening to this concert on this unedited live recording evokes the same sprit of freedom that Duke Ellington, Dr. Martin Luther King and many others found to be the unique spiritual quality of jazz. The music of this trio is equally at home in jazz clubs and churches. The passionate and dedicated way in which the musicians are engaged in Music Against Violence, their initiative for a more just and peaceful society, underlines in a remarkable way that they mean and live what they play, just as great jazz musicians have always strived to achieve!
